When it comes to your cosmetic goals, Birmingham Plastic Surgery prioritizes innovation in order to make the latest technology and treatments available to you. Dr. Karaca and the team are proud to be among the first Detroit-area providers of HALO™ treatments. This laser system treats skin to diminish the appearance of large pores and even skin tone and texture.
What is the Halo™ Fractional Laser?
The state-of-the-art Halo™ hybrid fractional laser was developed by Sciton®. It is the only laser of its type available for use. Prior to introduction to the market, there were two other options for treatment: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative laser treatments were effective but required significant recovery time, while non-ablative treatments were less effective with no recovery time.
While an ablative laser is highly effective at resurfacing the skin, it requires a lengthy recovery period of up to two weeks. Non-ablative laser treatment requires little to no recovery period, but only heats the outer layers of the skin rather than removing them. This means several follow-up treatments are required to achieve the patient’s goals.
HALO™’s innovative technology achieves what seemed previously impossible; it combines both lasers to deliver specific treatment to the epidermis and dermis at the same time. This allows the patient the best of both: significant results with little downtime required.
The energy and heat from the Halo™ laser creates microscopic breaks to the skin’s surface. The natural healing process begins, and new skin cells replace the old, leaving radiant, younger looking skin in place of dull, older skin. In the healing process, collagen is naturally produced, enhancing the appearance of the new skin.
Dynamic Thermal Optimization (DTO) constantly checks the skin’s temperature to automatically adjust the laser and maximize results. This and various other settings allow the Halo™ laser treatment to be custom-tailored to each patient’s needs and performed safely.

What can I expect from a HALO™ Laser treatment?
Treatment is completed in 30 minutes or less and does not generally cause any pain. The Halo™ laser utilizes a unique cooling tip to maintain patient comfort both during and after treatment. The laser is passed safely over the surface of your skin, emitting quick pulses of energy. The safe and effective procedure requires just one pass over the skin, per treatment area.
Halo™ Fractional Laser Treatment Recovery
After the Halo™ laser procedure is complete, cream will be applied to your face to promote healing and comfort. Minor swelling and redness may occur, like a mild sunburn, but should resolve within 24 hours. To alleviate any discomfort, you can apply a cold compress to the affected area.
Normal activity is safe to resume the same day after treatment. It may look as though you’ve had sun exposure. Two to three days post-treatment, the skin may bronze before beginning to peel. Dryness and rough spots are not abnormal during this phase of healing. The process takes up to one week for the face, but other treatment areas may take as long as two weeks to entirely peel.
Once the skin completely peels, a healthy youthful glow will be left behind. It is essential to wear sunscreen during this healing process, as you’ll be more sensitive to sun exposure than normal.
