Blepharoplasty in Detroit, MI
For many people, drooping and sagging eyelids are the only real deterrent to an otherwise youthful appearance. For these men and women who live in and around Detroit, Farmington Hills and the surrounding communities of Michigan, Birmingham Plastic Surgery, led by board-certified plastic surgeon Ahmet R. Karaca, M.D., offers blepharoplasty.
What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that trims away excess skin and fatty deposits from the upper and lower eyelids, tightens muscle and skin tissue around the eye area, and imparts a rejuvenated appearance to the eyes. Eyelid surgery eliminates loose skin from the upper eyelids, as well as beneath the eyes. In many patients, these skin folds make them look older and may, in some cases, also interfere with the ability to see clearly.
Benefits of Blepharoplasty
The main benefit of blepharoplasty is that it rejuvenates the eyes and face by eliminating drooping eyelids that may interfere with a person’s ability to see properly and make people look much older. Blepharoplasty restores a youthful appearance to the eyes and face, improving self-confidence and self-esteem.
Are You a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery is an option for adult men and women who enjoy generally good health, have healthy facial tissue and muscles, and want to eliminate drooping eyelids and bags under their eyes. All candidates for this procedure should have reasonable goals as to what plastic surgery can realistically accomplish.
Candidates for eyelid surgery include healthy adults who wish to correct the following conditions:
- Droopy eyelids
- Puffiness and bags under the eyes
- Skin folds around the eyes that hinder your ability to see clearly
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty, or upper eyelid surgery, eliminates loose, sagging skin that may cause hooding over the eye. It may also repair muscle tissue around the eye that has lost elasticity and firmness, creating a more alert appearance.
Ideal Candidates for Upper Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty is best suited for individuals who enjoy general good health and seek to eliminate excess skin around the eyelids, puffiness around the eyes and other concerns caused by sagging skin and lax muscles in the eye region.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid surgery removes fatty tissue, along with a minimal amount of skin tissue. This procedure tightens skin and muscle tissue in the lower eyelids and removes bags caused by fatty deposits below the eye. Although this procedure does not remove fine lines, wrinkles, “crow’s feet” or “laugh lines,” some patients combine the lower eyelid surgery with other procedures to achieve a total makeover.
Ideal Candidates for Lower Eyelid Surgery
You may be an ideal candidate for lower eyelid surgery if you are a healthy adult with excess skin and fine wrinkles around the lower eyelids, or if you have puffy bags under your eyes.
Some patients report minor discomfort, such as blurred vision, tightness around the eyes, bruising and swelling following the surgery, however, these symptoms disappear on their own within a few days. Your stitches will be removed after a week, and after two weeks, you may resume non-strenuous activities, and you may wear contact lenses if needed. We recommend follow-up care for the delicate skin around your eyes for several months after the procedure. We also stress the use of sun block on your eyelids, as well as the use of sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun damage.
What Can Be Done For Dark Circles Under My Eyes?
Lower eyelid surgery may effectively remove dark circles if shadowing is due to bulges or bags, however, if the dark circles are caused by hyperpigmentation, skin bleaching creams or light chemical peels may better treat this condition.
How Old Should I Be To Undergo Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery is safe for any healthy, fully developed adult. Excessive skin in the upper lids or bulging fat in the lower lids is most commonly seen in older adults, however, young people may occasionally be affected by genetic conditions that produce these same characteristics.
When Should Eyelid Surgery Be Combined With A Brow Lift?
Many patients choose to combine eyelid surgery with a brow lift in cases where the same condition of loose, sagging skin affects both the eyebrows and eyelids, due to loss of skin elasticity in the entire region.
How Much Does Blepharoplasty Cost in Detroit?
Cosmetic procedures are customized for each patient, therefore, the costs will vary between patients. To help pay for procedures not covered by health insurance, Dr. Karaca is happy to provide flexible financing options that offer payment plans. Our office also accepts cash, personal checks, and credit cards.
